Learn To Ride A Bike

As a member of the Reach Out Des Moines Coalition, Y.E.T.I. works closely with other community groups to provide resources for the Pacific Crest neighborhood. With the move to online classes during the pandemic, many youth experienced a decrease in access to physical activity. Y.E.T.I. went to work. We set up a 9 week Learn How to Ride a Bike class for 10 students. Each child that didn’t have a bike was gifted one and, now, all of the participants now have a new and fun way to move outside. This program was powered through these incredible partners:

Cascade Bicycle Club: Allowed the free use of their bikes.
Kids Need Bikes, nonprofit sourcing the  new bikes.
Midway Covenant Church, provided for the use of their parking lot.
Des Moines Police Department, gave away helmets and bike police joined some of the rides.
Reach Out Des Moines, helped with student outreach.

sustaining donation allows Y.E.T.I. to forge partnerships which provide access to outdoor recreation and enables our staff and volunteers to continue to deliver programs like these. Above is a video from Tibian, one of our riders, explaining what she learned. We are excited to know that she and the other participants will continue to enjoy bike riding all spring and beyond as we look forward to seeing them on more Y.E.T.I. adventures soon
