Y.E.T.I.’s success is largely thanks to our amazing volunteers. That’s why we’re excited to celebrate Dalton Rockwell, a physical education teacher at Cascade View Elementary in the Tukwila School District, who has gone above and beyond to make a lasting impact on his students’ lives through outdoor adventures.
The Beginning of Dalton's Y.E.T.I. Journey
Dalton first reached out to Y.E.T.I. in early 2020, eager to learn more about the organization and how it could benefit his students. As the pandemic shut things down, Dalton stepped back from these plans while we all navigated the challenges of the time. Once Y.E.T.I. resumed trips, Dalton joined in as a volunteer, contributing wherever he could to help local students access nature through activities like hiking, biking, climbing, kayaking, and more.
Starting in the 2022-2023 school year, Dalton launched the first-ever Y.E.T.I. Club at Cascade View Elementary. What began as a pilot program in Tukwila has since blossomed into something much bigger, thanks to a dedicated team, including other teachers and district staff who believed in creating these outdoor opportunities for students.
Expanding Opportunities for Students
Recognizing the value of Y.E.T.I.’s outdoor experiences, he connected with more enthusiastic teachers and staff who shared his vision. In 2023-2024, they not only restarted the club at Cascade View but also introduced it at Foster High School, creating a path for students to continue their Y.E.T.I. journey as they moved up in grades.
Now, in 2024-2025, Y.E.T.I. is present at three schools in the Tukwila School District, thanks to Dalton’s collaboration with a network of dedicated teachers and district staff. Their efforts mean students can take part in Y.E.T.I. programming from 4th grade through their senior year.
Leading Beyond the Classroom
Dalton’s story stands out because everything he’s done has been entirely self-motivated. No one asked him to go above and beyond his role as a teacher, and there wasn’t a set plan for him to follow. Initially, when challenges arose in getting the Y.E.T.I. Club off the ground, Dalton connected with staff at the district office to find support. His determination shows just how committed he is to opening up new opportunities for his students, especially for those who face financial, social, and cultural barriers to outdoor access.
Recognized as a Hero of the Deep by the Seattle Kraken
Dalton is being recognized by the Seattle Kraken through their Hero of the Deep award, a program designed to spotlight individuals who go above and beyond in their communities. As part of this honor, Y.E.T.I. will receive a $32,000 donation from the Kraken Unity Fund. This grant will help us reach even more students in the Tukwila School District.
This recognition not only highlights Dalton’s impact but also underscores Y.E.T.I.’s vision that all young people have access to outdoor adventures and time in nature.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate Dalton’s recognition as a Hero of the Deep, we also look forward to continuing the journey he’s helped build. The $32,000 grant from the Kraken Unity Fund will be put to work right away, allowing Y.E.T.I. to expand its programming in the Tukwila School District and beyond.
Thank you, Dalton, and all the amazing teachers and district staff for everything you’ve done to uplift your community and for helping Y.E.T.I. grow into what it is today. We can’t wait to see what’s next!
If you’re inspired by Dalton’s work, consider joining us as a volunteer. Together, we can create even more opportunities for our students!
