April Recap

April gave us longer days, warmer weather, and all kinds of outdoor adventures for Y.E.T.I. participants. From prepping for big trips to diving into favorite activities like kayaking and biking, here’s what we were up to this month:

Fishing Fun

Glacier Middle School kicked off the month with a fishing trip and had just as much fun digging for earthworms as they did casting lines!

Climbing Adventures

Climbing continued to be a favorite activity. Tyee High School climbed at SBP early in the month, pushing themselves on new routes. Later on, youth from African Community Housing & Development (ACHDO) joined us for a climbing day at Exit 38.

Spring Break

High school students spent spring break camping at Tolt MacDonald Campground. They set up tents, cooked together, and made memories around the campfire. Soaking up the outdoors and getting closer as a group.

Kayaking Fun

Y.E.T.I. Clubs from Evergreen and Foster High Schools made it out to Angle Lake twice in April. They practiced paddling, learned boat signals, and played games like red light-green light and battleship, all while cruising across the lake.

Biking the Trails

Biking was a big hit this month:

  • Pacific Middle School biked the Des Moines Creek Trail, ending the ride with some play in the water.
  • Cascade View Elementary rode through North SeaTac Park and wrapped up with games and playground time.
  • Pacific and Sylvester Middle Schools came back to the Des Moines Creek Trail later in the month for another ride in the sun.

Hiking Highlights

We spent a lot of time on the trails in April:

  • Sylvester Middle School explored Seahurst Park. Some headed deep into the forest, while others played on the beach, climbed rocks, and waded in the water.
  • Glacier and Showalter Middle Schools hiked through Lincoln Park, hiking through the woods before hitting the beach for an epic game of “the floor is lava” on the driftwood.
  • Evergreen High School hiked at Tiger Mountain to prep for their big Mount Adams trip coming up.

Community Care

On April 25, to celebrate Earth Day, which was earlier in the week, Glacier Middle School started their day with a trash pickup around campus. Everyone got gloves and a bag, and the top two collectors got to pick out the group’s ice cream flavor. Then they headed to Seahurst Park to hang out at the beach.

The Big Picture

Whether it was gearing up for overnight trips, paddling across a lake, or trash pickups on campus, April was full of action, learning, and connection. As we roll into May, we’re more ready than ever for more time outside!
