After school, Sam and Claudia, Y.E.T.I. staff members, took Cascade View Elementary’s Y.E.T.I. Club to Seward Park for an afternoon of adventure.
They arrived with maps in hand, but instead of leading the way, Sam let the students decide the route. They eagerly picked a trail, and before long, they found a giant tree fort. Without hesitation, the club transformed it into their own world of imagination, balancing across wooden planks like pirates on a wobbly ship.
When they spotted the water, they had to get closer. Sticks and rocks were tossed into the waves, and everyone got lost in the simple fun of being outside. Then came a new challenge—could they find their way to the playground? Suddenly, the maps mattered. Using a trail sign to get their bearings, the students worked together, figured out the route, and took off.
The playground was a highlight—full of running, laughter, and moments captured on camera. But the biggest surprise of the day came when they stumbled upon the amphitheater. Right away, Sam and Claudia became the audience while the students put on not one but two full performances. The good guys chased robbers, and dramatic escapes unfolded.
As the day wrapped up, the students reflected on their adventure. Their favorite moments? The playground. The play. The feeling of getting lost in a story they created together.
There’s something about an afternoon like this that sticks with you. Finding the playground took teamwork, running around built strength, and laughing together lifted spirits. Outdoor play is packed with moments and benefits like these—ones that every young person deserves.
