Meet Abshir
A new student, Abshir, joined the Showalter Y.E.T.I. Club. He just moved to Seattle from Colorado. The club was headed to North Seatac for a scavenger hunt, and Sam, one of Y.E.T.I.’s Program Coordinators, was excited to see how the group would welcome him. As always, the students proved just how awesome they are.
Instantly Welcomed
Before they even got out of the van, Sam told the group they had a new friend and they were going to show him their “READY MODE,” a strategy to get everyone in a circle and ready to listen. The students piled out of the van and jumped right into it. Without even asking his name, two of the more energetic students immediately pulled Abshir into their team.
Sam shared, “I just thought it was so sweet they didn’t even know his name but knew they needed him on their team. They were so inclusive, and it was so cool to watch this new student thrive in this group who already knew each other pretty well. I felt really proud of my students in that moment.”
Teamwork in Action
As they worked through the scavenger hunt, Abshir quickly became a part of his new team. They worked together to find candy “caches” hidden around the park. Each time they found one, Abshir would offer his candy to the adults which was such a kind and thoughtful gesture!
Playground Fun
The day ended with a trip to the playground because, let’s face it, who outgrows the playground? Abshir and the other students wandered into the community center, and when Abshir saw a karate class, he eagerly asked about it. It was amazing to watch him make connections in his new community.
A Heartwarming Day
It was such a wholesome day watching the students work together, include each other, and have fun. Abshir might have been the new participant, but by the end of the day, he was already part of the Y.E.T.I. family.
Can’t wait for more days like this full of laughter, new friends, and of course, adventure.
