January Recap

Snowboarding with CHILL

Foster High School started weekly snowboarding trips to Stevens Pass through our partnership with the CHILL Foundation, with students gaining confidence each week and staying motivated to get back on the mountain!

Students crushed it out there. And side note: is Sam, our Program Coordinator, the best cheerleader or what?
First day verdict: amazing. Bonus highlight: crispy fries and bacon on the burger. Priorities = correct.

Snowshoeing and Winter Play

Rainier Prep, Seattle Housing Authority, Parkside Elementary, The Circle, and an open-enrollment group all headed to Snoqualmie Pass this month. Snowshoes crunched, sleds flew, cheeks turned red, and everyone remembered that winter days outside are actually pretty great.

POV: Students ask for Y.E.T.I. trips every single day.

Hikes Across Parks and Trails

January hikes took us everywhere. Cascade View Elementary went to Lincoln Park, Mt. Rainier High School kept returning to Schmitz Preserve Park, and other groups explored Dash Point, Seahurst Park, Marine View Park, Salmon Creek Ravine, and Seward Park. Sylvester Middle School fully leaned into adventure at Salmon Creek with steep climbs, creek stomping, and a truly iconic moment when Hudson caught a fish in the creek.

Fishing Trips and Successes

Fishing was a January staple, with Pacific, Glacier, Sylvester, Showalter, and Cascade View Middle Schools plus Maritime and Evergreen High Schools getting lines in the water at Des Moines Pier, North SeaTac Park, and Angle Lake. There were first trips, sunset sessions, music in the van, lots of patience, and the discovery that raw shrimp is elite bait. Celebrations were loud when fish were caught.

Dream catch: a giant squid. Fish caught: unclear. Joy level: extremely clear.

Climbing Days

Sylvester and Glacier Middle School wrapped up the month rappelling at Camp Long. Students encouraged each other and left with proud smiles.

Nothing says friendship like quietly whispering “you got this” while your friend rappels.

The Big Picture

January was muddy boots, cold hands, and a whole lot of connection. Students showed up for each other and set a strong, joyful tone for the year ahead.
