Last weekend, Showalter Middle School’s Y.E.T.I. Club ventured into the snow with the Washington Alpine Club (WAC), ready for a day of adventure.
Our program coordinators, Renee and Sam, were there to help guide the group, but from the moment they arrived, the students had one thing on their minds—PLAYING IN THE SNOW. As soon as they strapped on their snowshoes and walked about 100 feet, Siroos turned to Sam with big eyes and asked, “Miss Sam, can I jump in the snow?”
Obviously, the answer was YES.
What followed was an all-out snow day dream—young people diving into snowbanks, launching snowballs, and even burying Liam in the snow (don’t worry, we dug him back out). They trekked on, maybe a little too far—what goes downhill must come back up, and that uphill return had everyone peeling off layers and taking plenty of breaks. But the challenge was worth it because at the top, a warm, homemade meal from the WAC volunteers was waiting. Talk about the ultimate reward!
Melina, an 8th grader and daughter of the WAC president, led the group up and down the hill and even bonded with Sarai, our only 8th-grade Y.E.T.I. that day. The two were caught mid-selfie, and we love to see new friendships forming on the trails!
After lunch, it was straight to the sledding hill. Melina and Orlando set out to build a snowman, but with so much fresh snow around, it wasn’t long before their project turned into an impromptu snowball fight instead. (Sorry, Sam, we saw those giant snowballs coming your way!)
Between the snowball fights, sledding, and lying in the snow to watch flakes fall from the sky, it was the kind of day that reminds us why we do what we do. Huge thanks to the Washington Alpine Club for hosting and to our amazing Showalter Y.E.T.I.s for bringing their adventurous spirit!
Until the next snowy adventure!
